Italy Leads in Organic Catering for Schools

It has been obligatory to offer organic food components in Italian schools
since 2000. The aim of the law was to create advertising for organic food
and high-quality production. The regulation is not, however, implemented
everywhere. As many as 500 of 8,100 communities do regularly offer
organic meals or organic components for lunches for schoolchildren. 140,000
children a day receive organic meals in Rome alone, reports Organic Trade
Services.

Legislation is also well advanced in Emilia Romagna. Expiring contracts
with bulk suppliers are being replaced with contracts with suppliers that
provide organic food. All day nurseries and primary schools are obliged to
offer exclusively organic meals, which means all 350,000 schoolchildren
affected will receive one regular organic meal a day by 2005.
