Moratorium on the commercial use of rBGH

There is a ban or moratorium on the commercial use of rBGH (rBST) in Europe at least until the year 2000. Although it is legal to inject test herds on an experimental basis, it is illegal to sell the genetically engineered milk. Monsanto announced in mid-1996 that they have abandoned plans to seek approval for their rBGH drug, Posilac, outside of North America. Eli-Lily has made half-hearted attempts to apply for approval of their rBGH product, but evidence indicates that this is more of a public relations move (to cover up the fact that rBGH has failed miserably in the U.S. and that most consumers believe it is a dangerous drug).
