Please join us in this HUMAN RIGHTS STRUGGLE!
Where: Starbucks, 23rd and Jackson in the Central District When:
Wednesday June 13th, 5:30pm
On Saturday night, there was a large community meeting at New
Hope Baptist Church to plan a response to the most recent killing
of an unarmed black man (Aaron Roberts). The People's Coalition
for Justice has issued a set of demands, including an elected
police review board and an end to racial profiling. They have
also announced a boycott of Starbucks at 23rd and Jackson, starting
this Wednesday, June 13, at 5:30 pm. Their intention is to address
the question of economic justice, and to require that businesses
that do business in their community JOIN THE COMMUNITY in calling
for police accountability.
As you know, Friends of the Earth and Organic Consumers Association
is targeting Starbucks for the following:
~ for refusing to guarantee that their products do not contain
rBGH and other genetically engineered ingredients. ~ for not brewing
and seriously promoting Fair Trade coffee. ~ for allowing low
wages and unjust labor practices on the coffee plantations of
their suppliers. ~ for not following through on a previous agreement
to improve the working conditions on the coffee plantations which
supply them with coffee.
The Starbuck's International Protest is scheduled for June 25-29,
2001.
The timing of these two efforts offers us an incredible opportunity
to connect the struggles for justice of one local community of
color and the struggles for justice and sustainability around
the world. Please remember that this is EVERYONE'S issue! Please
join us in the boycott line this Wednesday evening, June 13, at
5:30 pm, at the Starbucks at 23rd and
Jackson, in the Central District of Seattle.
THE PEOPLE UNITED WILL NEVER BE DIVIDED! Only when we stand
together can we make a difference.
