Letter to OCA Director Ronnie Cummins,
This is Rene Jankiewicz with the International Union of Operating
Engineers, local 286. We are the union that organized Starbucks
maintenance mechanics and technicians at the Kent roasting facility.
We are almost 2 years now, without a contract. We met at the
march 20, shareholders action and continue to support all organization
with a "beef" against Starbucks... We were hoping that
you could possibly support our endevour by putting our info on
your website. I know its a lot to ask, but the workers would
very much appreciate any support you can lend. The following is
the info we'd like you to include:
The maintenance mechanics and technicians at Starbucks Kent,
Washington, roasting plant voted to be represented by the International
Union of Operating Engineers, local 286, in October, 1999. As
of June, 2001 these workers are still without a contract. These
workers are struggling for basic security and a voice at work.
They want: A fair wage A secure retirement Affordable medical
care
Starbucks is resistant to these basic concepts while in 2000:
Orin Smith, CEO, received $14.89 million (a $227.93% increase
on his yearly salary)
Howard Schultz, Chairman, received $13.13 million (a 164.81%
increase on his total yearly salary)
Does this sound fair? Email Howard and tell him to settle a fair
agreement at hschultz@starbucks.com
You can also email IUOE #286 to learn more about how you can
help achieve fairness for Starbucks workers organize@iuoe286.org
Thanks Ronnie, we sure appreciate it.
